Wintner's Movie Reviews

I'm a huge movie fan. I go to the movies 2-3 times a week. So before you go out and drop $12 on a bad movie, read my reviews and I'll tell you what's up. Just do the world a favor and turn your cell phone off during the movie. As a matter of fact, during the trailers as well.

CHANGELING
Clint Eastwood once again proves that he is one hell of a director. In an age of MTV style quick cut editing, he shows the beauty of letting a story slowly unfold. Changeling is a superb, heartfelt drama with strong actors carrying the emotional weight of this true story. Angelina Jolie is a lock to be nominated for best actress for her performance as a desperate, tormented mother. Clint delivers with another solid movie that is sure to become a classic.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3
High School Musical graduates to the big screen with this third installment of the high spirited franchise. All I can say is, it will have you cheering in your seat. It's a fun time for the whole family. My kids loved the big musical numbers and the energetic pop songs. All the stars of this movie shine, and I see great careers ahead for many of them.

PRIDE AND GLORY
Edward Norton has always been a safe bet in my book. He can make a bad movie watchable and a good movie even better. Colin Farrell on the other hand has been hit or miss. He misses when he picks blockbusters (Miami Vice, SWAT, Daredevil), and hits when he picks smaller, character driven movies. Pride and Glory is a hit. It's an exceptional drama that kept me interested through most of the movie, and Farrell blew me away with his performance. The only bad thing I can say about it is the end gets a little long, but aside from that it's a solid flick.

LAKEVIEW TERRACE
It will protect you and at the same time serve with some serious drama. What can be worse then having an angry screwed up Samuel Jackson as your neighbor? Surprisingly this movie was very entertaining as sick as you might be of Samuel L.

TROPIC THUNDER
Warning, the weekend forecast calls for some major thunder, Tropic Thunder. All I have to say is f**k yes! If you thought that Downey Jr. looked funny in the trailer, wait until you see him in the movie. He's so convincing in this movie, you almost forget that he's not black. And major kudos to Tom Cruise for a small, but hilarious role. His scene stealing performance may be just the thing to get him back in everybody's good graces. Tropic Thunder was much better than I expected, and may be the comedy of the summer. Definitely in my top 5 of the summer and definitely worth seeing!

THE DARK KNIGHT
I'm a huge fan of superhero moives. I loved The Hulk, Iron Man, and Hellboy. I gave them all great reviews. However The Dark Knight is in a class of it's own. For some, it may be perfect. For others, it might feel too serious with not enough cartoonish qualities. You should know going in, this is a superhero movie for adults, not your wacky Burton Batman and not your fantasy Rami Spiderman. This movie has more story and less action, less color and more darkness. Like what Rocky did for boxing movies, this movie redefines the category of superhero pics and sets a new gold standard. Congrats to The Bat for breaking box office records! Sadly, Heath Ledger, who creates an amazing Joker persona, can't be here for it's success.

HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY
Hellboy II has that Guillermo del Toro feel. It's visually amazing, with creatures similar to the stuff we've seen in Pan's Labyrinth. The characters are a bit more fleshed out since the last time we saw them and the villain is bad ass. There aren't many bad things to say about Hellboy II, except perhaps it was too stylized, not really fitting the look and feel established in the first Hellboy movie. I see what they wanted to do, but I think I would have preferred it to be more gritty and less polished. To me it felt like X-Men meets Star Wars Episode I. However, don't get me wrong, this is a great, fun film. Hellboy is a small slice of Heaven.

HANCOCK
Rock out with your Hancock out. Once again a movie with horrible reviews is one of my summer favorites. This movie was awesome. Great story, great action, great cast, and Charlize Theron definatley gets best hottie of the summer. All kiding aside, this film is a perfect summer movie. Will Smith is da man once again. Let's just take a quick stroll down Will Smith Lane. MIB, Independence Day, I Am Legend, Pursuit of Happyness, I Robot, Hitch, Ali, Bad Boys... and he even gets jiggy in Miami. I can't wait for his next movie, Seven Pounds, which is due out later this year.

WALL-E
The "E" in Wall-E stands for Excellent, Exciting and Entertaining. Pixar keeps their perfect record going by making another wonderful animated movie for kids and adults. The character Wall-E is as lovable as E.T. and the story has great messages about saving our planet. Even the short film before the feature, "Presto", is great and sure to be another Oscar winner next year. Nobody does it better than Pixar, and Wall-E is out of this world!

THE LOVE GURU
I pick Pitka as my guru. Ok I'll be honest. Based on some horrible reviews I read before seeing this movie, I thought I was in for a real disaster. But since I'm a fan of Mike Myers and the characters he creates, let me just say, I loved The Love Guru. It was silly, but I laughed more times than I can remember, and sometimes uncontrollably. I think Myers tries very hard to bring out something different, and he does a great job at it. Fuck the critics. Take it for what it is and have a good time. If you see this movie and don't piss your pants, then I'm a butthead.

GET SMART
Get some sleep. I can only review this movie based on what I saw before I fell asleep. I'm not sure if it's because of the lack of entertainment or if it was because I didn't have my iced vanilla latte before the movie. Although the movie was based on the brilliant tv show, there was little resemblance aside from a few catch phrases and the character names. I found Get Smart to be very average, the jokes were the same typical jokes you've seen a million times before. I'm not saying it was a bad movie, but as far as comedies go, it wasn't anything that left an impact. Get Smart will probably be a great rental in a few months.
