Wintner's Movie Reviews I'm a huge movie fan. I go to the movies 2-3 times a week. So before you go out and drop $12 on a bad movie, read my reviews and I'll tell you what's up. Just do the world a favor and turn your cell phone off during the movie. As a matter of fact, during the trailers as well.
AVATAR OMG, the best movie experience I have had since I was a little boy watching Star Wars for the first time! I cannot find one bad thing about the film, it's a masterpiece on every level. Not just the beauty of it, but there is meat to the story. It's like Braveheart meets Star Wars, but better. I've seen it four times.
NINE Even with some of Hollywood's sexiest stars, and Daniel Day-Lewis, I still have to say this movie was a disaster. It's no Chicago, that's for sure. Don't bother.
SHERLOCK HOLMES Fun, but I found it a bit slow. True to the characters it is, and a fun mystery, but it was a bit long and quite slow. Still, I was entertained and I consider this a good film. Let's face it, Downey Jr. and Jude Law can't go wrong. Looks like Guy Ritchie got his balls back from Madonna.
IT'S COMPLICATED At first I was not impressed. I had to get used to Streep and Baldwin trying to be sexy. But half way through the movie I found myself laughing a lot, and thought this is actually a refreshing heart-felt comedy. It's a good break from the juvenile Apatow humor. I liked it and I recommend it.
UP IN THE AIR Sorry, not my cup of java. For starters, I can't look at Clooney. He bothers me. The movie is a lame story. I laughed maybe five times, lightly. But I found my ass hurting quite a bit. Usually that's a sign for me to get out of the chair.
BROTHERS Unfortunately the movie was not as good as the trailer. I went in expecting a very dark film, and the truth is, it wasn't. It is a movie about how a family deals with serious drama, and how they all come together to overcome it. It's not the typical fun film about family that we usually see around the holidays, but let's face it, family is not always laughs and giggles. The performances were superb. Actually, my favorite was Jake Gyllenhaal. Don't get me wrong, it was a good film, but I just expected more.
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON I was about to dog the crap out of the Abercrombie vampires, then I realized that I forgot that this is a movie for teens, so it should be judged from a teenager's eye. That said, this movie is still dick cheese...just kidding. I kinda liked the story and the wolves are kick ass. The problem is, after being bad ass werewolves, they transform back into wimpy teenage boys with no shirts and Calvin Klein briefs that rise above their New Religion jeans. I think Edwin is a completely boring actor, Jacob is the best thing in the film, and that says very little. Overall, don't see it if you are over 21. And if you are a grown, straight man, most likely your ho or wife dragged you to this, so hang in for her. Sorry Twilight fans, this is not a good vampire movie.
2012 A whole lot of special effects and a whole bunch of cheezy ass acting. If you liked the trailer and tv spots, then you may like this movie. But just imagine 3 hours of what seemed like a parody on disaster movies. Just when I thought the movie couldn't get any worse, it got completely ridiculous. Yet it was still entertaining for the first hour and a half. By the time I got to the second hour, I wanted to yell "Fuck! Enough of this shit!", I would consider this a complete movie disaster, and just a sign of where out industry is going. We are out of ideas my friends, and this is proof.
A CHRISTMAS CAROL - Guest Review by Tova Wintner Hold on to your seats for this wild ride, that is if you don't get motion sickness. This move is more of a creepy Christmas Carol, with ghosts and ghouls, it felt like a Halloween spectacle. All the visual pizazz detracted from Jim Carey's performance at times. Keep the young ones at home as this is definitely way too frightening and stimulating for them. My favorite part of this 3-D movie was the feeling of being on a virtual roller coaster in the falling snow!! I give this movie a 2 star rating. Sorry Scrooge!!
PRECIOUS - Guest Review by Tova Wintner Based on the novel Push by Sapphire, this movie will leave you in awe. Simply a must-see. Performances by newcomer Gabby Sidibe, simply amazing as the Illiterate, abused teenager. Marian Carey as the social worker is almost unrecognizable. But the performance that takes the cake for me is Monique as the evil mother. Can we say Mommy Dearest times 1000??? Who know she had it in her. You will hate her guaranteed, and isn't that what makes a true Oscar winner? Precious gets 5 stars from me. Some scenes are extremely hard to watch, but will leave you feeling that life is indeed precious!!
